The lock is what separates a good retractable lead
A retractable lead without a catch forces you to keep the thumb pressed for the whole crossing. This button has two positions: held down it brakes while another dog passes ; pushed forward it stays locked and the lead behaves like a fixed lead at the chosen length. You can then open a door or carry a bag with the other hand.
Flat webbing rather than cord
Thin cord, on a dog that bolts, wraps around leg or hand and burns. Flat webbing spreads the load across its full width, and it stays visible on the ground so a passer-by does not walk into it.
