What compression is really for
Bulky textiles — duvet, down jacket, thick jumper — are mostly air. Removing that air halves the volume without changing the weight. In a wardrobe it frees a whole shelf ; in a suitcase it lets you take a winter coat without sacrificing the rest. The textile regains its shape after a few hours in open air.
What should not go in
Compression suits cotton, wool and synthetic fillings. Natural down copes badly with prolonged compression over months, and leather creases. For those materials, conventional storage is better.
