The spout is open enough for a dog to lap rather than suck, and narrow enough not to empty when tilted.

Why we offer both
The fold-out bowl model recovers water and doubles as a feeding bowl, but it weighs more and has a hinge. This one does a single thing: give a drink, as lightly as possible. For a runner, a cyclist or a half-hour round, that is often the right choice.
What it does not do
Water not drunk from the spout is not recovered: what runs out is lost. If your animal drinks slowly, or if you also want to serve kibble, take the other model.
